Are Phone Cards Better than the Phone Company?

Posted By Admin on June 26, 2008 @ 11:46 pm

I have always wondered if phone cards were better than getting your long distance through the phone company.  I see the really low rates that are promised on the displays in stores and on websites, but it was my understanding that they always charged a connection fee.

But when I was reading a blog about the cheapest calling cards, I realized that I might have been wrong.  You see, the cards that they mentioned in their article didn’t have connection fees and in some instances were as much as ten times cheaper than what my phone company charged by the minute.

So, I have ordered a couple of them and I will be trying them out.  Sure, I don’t make a lot of long distance calls, but the cost does add up each month.  I figure that if the amount that I spend on calling cards is less than what the phone company charges me each month, I will finally know the answer.

Speeding up the Website Creation Process

Posted By Admin on June 12, 2008 @ 11:12 am

One of my biggest challenges as a business owner is a lack of time.  Sure, I would like to get everything done, but that is not a reality.  In fact, I would almost certainly say that there is never enough time – we just have to make the best of what little we have.

When it comes to my website empire, my challenge is the number of sites I have to create.  I mostly have all the content outsourced, but I still do the web designing myself.  A good example of time eating tasks would be the JavaScript menu I created for one of my sites – it took way too long.

So, when I came to a site promising quick and easy web design software I was hooked.  I could use anything to reduce my workload, and the software promised just that.

I purchased it and I am trying it out, and so far I am pleased.  It has made life a lot easier, so much so that I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of using something like this sooner.  Anyway, it has sure sped up my website creation – and for that I am thankful.

Easy-to-Open Packaging

Posted By Deb Gallardo on May 14, 2008 @ 1:46 pm

I’ve come up with a few business opportunities for a clever inventor.

a. Patent a new kind of plastic packaging that is just as difficult to open in the store as current clear plastic, shoplifting-proof packages are — you know the kind I’m talking about. But once the item is scanned, the packaging opens readily.

b. Recreate the automobile fly window, aka the window vent. When air conditioning became standard equipment in cars, apparently the auto industry felt that the fresh air intake was a viable substitute for those versatile, triangular windows in the front seat.

They come in handy when it’s raining but the weather is too cool outside to run the air conditioning. They’re adjustable, pivoting well over 90 degrees, allowing for any number of custom adjustments for perfect fresh air redirection.

c. Create a viable raw sewage system for train and bus restrooms so that these closet-sized “rooms” don’t smell like outhouses.

Inventors, start your engines!

Leasing Office Space

Posted By Admin on May 12, 2008 @ 12:30 pm

The property management company that I work for has recently acquired a client with a large number of office buildings downtown.  We will be in charge of leasing the office space for them and we need to fill the mostly vacant space with paying tenants.

In an effort to fill the spaces, management has conceived the idea that we should have a party on the location, open to businesses in the city that need office space.  It will not only give them a first person look at the location, but will also allow us to have the opportunity to convince them why they need to have an office with us.

Before this party will occur, we are getting a commercial photographer to come in and take pictures of the venue to generate interest for the party.

If this event ends up being the success that we forecast it to be, I think that we will use parties in the future to lease other commercial properties.

Flat Proof Skid Steer Tires

Posted By Admin on April 10, 2008 @ 9:13 am

We have been having a lot of problems on a job site with flat tires on our Bobcats.  You see, it is the site of a demolition of a hardware store, and we have been using Bobcats to clear up the mess.  The catch is, there are a ton of nails on the ground, and we have been having terrible problems with flat tires.

So, we have been searching for some sort of replacement for the tires as it is costing a lot of money to replace set after set of them.  After a quick search online, we have found a company that sells flat proof tires for Bobcat skid steer.

We have ordered a test order to give them a try and see if they live up to the promise of being flat proof.  I think that our job site will be the best test – if they make it through a day, we will be ordering a lot more.  It will let us spend more time on our work, instead of spending it all changing tires.

The End of Mosquito Spray

Posted By Admin on March 29, 2008 @ 10:34 am

SkeeterGuard For about as long as I can remember, we have been using bug spray to keep mosquitoes and other insects at bay.  Though this has worked in the past, it seems to be increasingly ineffective against the bugs.

My other problem with bug spray is the fact that you are bound to miss something, and get bitten there.  I cannot count the number of times that I have missed spraying behind my knees only to end up getting bitten there.

So, while at the store, I took a look to see if there were any more effective methods of keeping the mosquitoes away.  I didn’t want to buy one of those mosquito coils as they haven’t worked too well for me either.

It must have been my lucky day, as I found the Mosquito Patch.  All you have to do is put the patch on your clothing or near you and you can enjoy life free from mosquitoes for up to twelve hours.

Well, I bought a box as it is worth a try.  I hope it works and I can finally quit using bug spray.  That will make it a great summer indeed.

A Cost Effective Wedding

Posted By Mitefind on March 10, 2008 @ 1:11 am

When we were planning our wedding, my husband and I did everything as cheap as possible. We did not want things to look cheap and tacky, but we also did not want to go into debt by having an extravagant wedding. We were also planning on buying our first house and wanted to save as much money as we could for this.

We decided that we would go with practical favors and we gave everyone a small picture of the two of us together with the date stamped on it. We figured that everyone would like a picture rather than a book of matches. It went over very well and we got a lot of compliments on the idea.

The wedding went over very well and we had a great time without spending a lot of money. It was a nice wedding and I think everyone enjoyed it just as much as they would have if we had spent tens of thousands of dollars putting something together. I know the day was very memorable for me and my husband and in the end, which is what counts the most.

The Perfect Pregnancy Announcement

Posted By Admin on February 15, 2008 @ 10:09 pm

When we were pregnant for the first time, we were so excited that we told everyone.  Though this method was effective, it wasn’t very original.  Most people would announce a pregnancy this way, and we felt that it was a bit boring.  We vowed that we would figure out some way to make our second pregnancy announcement (years later) a little more original.

Between the time that we had the birth of our first child, to when we were pregnant with the second, we tossed ideas back and forth.  Most of them were crazy and ridiculous – what we needed was a good, solid and original idea.

What we came up with came to us by chance.  We happened to be at the mall one day, looking for clothes, when we saw a kiosk that allowed you to design your own T shirt.  It was as though lightning struck at that moment, and we finally found our great idea.

Though the kiosk vendor didn’t offer the type of shirt we were looking for, we decided to take our hunt online for the company that would allow us to make custom T shirts at a reasonable price.

We ended up going with a website that would allow you to make your own T shirt and have it shipped to you from their company.  The reason that we went with the company we did in the end, was that we could get a shirt in the size of our son, and they would allow you to order as little as one.

Needless to say, the shirt my son wore to the family Christmas party was a big hit – and ended up being the perfect pregnancy announcement.

Better than the Real Thing

Posted By Admin on January 21, 2008 @ 12:56 pm

I have owned a number of high end watches in my lifetime, and I have never really been impressed.  Sure, the watches look nice, but from my experience the durability of the watch is lackluster at best.  In my quest to find the luxury watch looks with better quality, I happened to stumble upon replica watches.

My first reaction was that they would be of poorer quality compared to the real thing, but I decided that the price merited that I try them out.  At less than half the price, there had to be a good market for watch replicas – so I had to buy one.

I ended up purchasing a Rolex replica watch that looked so much like the original, I had to do a double take.

Now, three months later, my replica is still running strong and looking good.  My results lead me to wonder if a replica is better than the real thing?

Social Bookmarking Sites Help Create Internet Buzz

Posted By Admin on January 16, 2008 @ 11:00 am

Are you familiar with the social bookmarking sites?  If you have ever heard of digg, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, reddit and others, you have heard of some of them.  In fact, there are hundreds of these types of sites online that allow you to store your bookmarks on them in case your computer crashes.

For those of you out there who own websites, you can use these social bookmarking sites to create some Internet buzz about your sites.  It also lets you get some feedback on what others think about your site since they can submit website ratings at these bookmarking sites as well.

I would suggest that you check them out.  You will see the best fun websites and serious websites there, ranked by popularity.  Accounts are also free, so that you can bookmark and rate the websites you visit too.

One word of advice – don’t just bookmark your own sites.  Try to bookmark other sites that you like and visit on a regular basis.  This shows that you are not just there to get traffic – but rather contribute to the community.  That is what social bookmarking is all about.
