Take a minute to give some consideration to your most recent trip. What was it that was most memorable? Now think about your first ever trip. Undoubtedly, you remember few things about the trip. The experiences you’ve forgotten are lost to time. If you had a travel journal, then that wouldn’t be so.

There are a lot of famous people who had kept journals. Anne Frank’s Diary is the best example. In her diary, Anne kept a running commentary of the two years her family spent hiding from the Nazis. By keeping a travel journal, you will be able to keep those memories fresh.

A good travel journal would have a number of characteristics. First, it should be compact so you don’t have to take up unnecessary space for other things. Secondly, it must have a case for protection from rain, spills, and other things. Third, the journal should contain blank areas to write your notes. And the journal must have cue spaces so you’d be reminded to jot down notes on certain things. The cues should include:

Who you had traveled with,

Where you had stayed and if you had found it enjoyable,

The people you met and their contact information,

Good places to eat, and

The things to see and if you would ever visit again.

When you finish your trip, you should be able to get the following things from your journal:

Contact information for the people that you’ve met,

Detailed information about the place so you’ll have a guide in case you visit that spot again,

Memories that you’ll want to remember in a few years, and

Something that you can pass on to your kids and grandkids.

You should spend a few minutes everyday writing on your journal. Every day of a trip brings new experiences even if you’re just sitting on a train or bus. If you get writers block, you can note whom you met, what you saw, etc.

When you travel, you get a chance to discover new things and meet new people. So don’t risk forgetting about your experiences.
