Years ago people didn’t eat out as much as they do today. They considered eating out as something they only did on a special occasion, such as a Birthday or Anniversary. Most people cooked their meals at home and even went so far as to bake their own bread, which is still very nice. These days you will often hear people say that they eat out 2 to 3 times a week. Depending on where they live, it could be even more often. However, with the weak economy that we have been dealing with over the last several years, people are either reducing the number of times they eat out per week or they are looking for ways to save money when eating out.
You should not have to give up eating out, though. If you want to eat out with your family after working hard all day, you should be able to do so. One method of saving money while dining out is to look at the prices before you look at the items you are considering ordering.
Look for restaurants that fit into your budget. For example, if you are feeding a family of 5, why not try a family type of restaurant that usually offers quite reasonable prices and even “meal deals”. Other great options are local cafes and diners. Usually the meals are homemade and quite tasty. And if you and your family or friends are really hungry, look for a local buffet and enjoy yourself.
Certain restaurants offer discounts on certain days or at specific times throughout the day, and we’ve all heard of the senior’s discount days that some restaurants offer.
Again, depending on where you live, many family type restaurants offer “kids eat free” meals. If you aren’t sure of where, take a look online for your local restaurants.
If you and your spouse are out together, you could share an entree and an appetizer. Think about how big the portions are at restaurants. Most restaurants welcome all customers and will allow you to share a meal. You can save your leftovers and have them the next day and you get two meals from one.
Look for ads with coupons in them or with specials listed in them in your newspaper but make sure that you read the entire ad so you know what you are going to get. If you purchase an entertainment book, there are many “buy one, get one” coupons for restaurants that are good for a year.
Yes there are lots of ways to eat out and still save money. Have you ever noticed that when you skip the cocktails or wine, the price of your dinner out is a lot less? You can also save money by either sharing a soda or simply having water with your meal. Sometimes it is nice to indulge and not worry about the cost of things, but if you eat out frequently, you may wish to begin paying attention to all the little extra costs of things. A good example of this is dessert. Typically restaurants charge somewhere around $7.00 for a slice of cake or an ice cream sundae. Again, this does depend on where you live. But think about. For $7.00 you can get a tub of yummy ice cream at your local grocery store and have dessert every night at home.
Once you have paid for your meal, take a look at the receipt. Some restaurants have started programs where they offer you a discount on your next meal if you complete their survey. If you enjoyed yourself, you will probably return, so keep the receipt handy. Eating out is fun, but sometimes we need to keep an eye on our budget. If you are looking for ways to save money while eating out, then give some of the above suggestions a try.
