Grasslands Are Vital to Cattle Ranching

It’s a common myth that much of the American cattle supply was obliterated when America began its westward expansion more than 150 years ago. The grasslands that make up the Midwestern landscape has been changed so much as progress and expansion have moved westward, that hundreds of small communities that owe their economy to livestock are withering right along with the grass. Much of the nation’s Midwest is being destroyed by overgrazing of cattle, which is costing plant life where grass once flourished and fed the cattle that made the grasslands what they were. Not only are the grasslands losing their agriculture, the cattle are losing vast supplies of food.

How do you save the grasslands that provide the feed needed to keep the cattle healthy and your beef supply at first rate? It isn’t hard as long as the land is kept in proper shape. There are a lot of questions and almost every cattle rancher has a different answer, but the answer really is easy. It’s a matter of maintaining the land and keeping plenty of grass available for the cattle to eat. It makes for a better beef product and so the key is to operate the ranch in a way that makes the cattle healthier instead of looking for ways to cut costs and limit the amount of cattle.

Ranchers can consistently double or even triple their livestock capacity over time if the ranches are managed correctly. It might not be the easiest solution, but if the land is fertile and managed correctly, there is still tons of money to be made in the cattle ranching industry. More cattle per acre rather than less are just one factor. By actively planning and managing the grazing of the cattle, the benefits become more of a solution to the current situation rather than a hindrance to the land.

A South African rancher named Allan Savory saw that if the cattle on a ranch had enough fresh grass that it could much more easily sustain the herd and keep them healthier. By allowing sunlight to shine through to allow grass to grow faster, it makes for healthier cattle and allows the cattle to roam to areas where the grass is greener and allows the other grass to regrow.

Smart cattle ranchers will move their cattle from one area to the next, allowing the grass to completely restore itself, providing more feed to the cattle and the soil on the land is also able to be aerated. It is not a difficult process, it jut involves patience and sunlight. Fresh grasslands can improve the quality of beef provided by the cattle and bring much needed income to any cattle ranch simply by rotating the cattle from one part of the ranch to another while the previous land is able to provide more grass for the cattle.
