BREAKFAST: Actually it means, “breaking the fast” in two words. Our body is in a mild state of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar when we awake after spending 6-8 hours sleeping and we have the need to eat or drink something.
To immediately elevate the depressed blood sugar levels, the first thing eaten should be fruit or fruit juice. There was such a thing as a juice glass which measured 4 ounces years ago in restaurants and in our grandmother’s kitchen. Just enough to do the job. Fruit juice that is pure and of high quality would be adequate as well as stewed fruits etc. though the fresh whole fruit would be best, in my opinion.
Next would be a major meal of your choice. You want to eat a big hearty meal because you are about to do a day’s work and need the energy that the meal will provide.
Once you eat, you can have your coffee. The result in you not feeling like eating due to the nausea is because of the coffee drank on an empty stomach which irritates the liver. Always drink coffee with food in the stomach.
LUNCH/DINNER: The “old word” for lunch was dinner. This is still used in many areas of the US. To keep that blood sugar elevated to normal, lunch should also be a hearty meal full of foods that will provide energy and strength. What prevents the afternoon slumps, is a good lunch. To properly digest the meal and to enjoy the moment, it used to be that after lunch a one hour siesta or rest was taken. After a hearty lunch along with a one hour rest, you are ready to go back into your world refreshed, nourished and relaxed.
SUPPER: Dinner is the “new word” for supper. The word supper means “light evening meal”. This, the last meal of the day should be as light and as clean as possible and contain no or very little animal protein. You simply do not need a meal that is heavy unless you are going to do a days work afterwards. The supper meal prepares the body to shut down for the night. It should be light and nutritious but not overpowering. For a minimum of 3 and preferably 5 hoursbefore bedtime, most importantly, nothing should be eaten. Eating late at night and eating meals that are way too heavy are the #1 reason of why people do not sleep well. Every system in their body is busy digesting and processing food that it does not need, instead of shutting down.
Even if we cannot apply all of this information into our daily lives, perhaps we can incorporate some of it.
