A roof is one of the most important parts of our homes’ exterior because it keeps out the rain, snow, hail and sun. If our roofs are not in good shape, the rest of the house will suffer.

A leaky roof allows water damage to the walls and ceilings of the rest of the house. Many things can damage roofs so that they need replacement. Minnesota roofing has to be strong enough to withstand extreme hot and cold temperatures, very wet and very dry conditions and hail and wind damage. Roofing has a limited lifetime of optimum service depending on the quality and type of roofing material used.

Your budget will also be a consideration. Metal roofs and solar roofs are long lasting and energy saving, but quite expensive as are cedar and slate shingle roofs. Asphalt, rubber and recycled composite shingles are the most common roofing materials because they are lower cost and proven over time. Shingles are easier for the home owner to do themselves, if they choose, to save money on labor. Installing a roof is very labor intensive and involves heights, so consider your physical ability and limitations.

Falling off a roof or ladder can generate a lot bigger hospital bill than hiring a contractor to install your roof. Doing your own roof will take longer than a contractor’s crew would, so your house will be vulnerable to the weather for a longer period of time.

Make sure the roofer has enough advance notice so he can devote all the time to your roof until it is done, instead of fitting it in with other jobs. Your house is vulnerable to the weather while the old roofing is torn off, the deck repaired and until the last shingle is nailed in place.

Your new roofing job should include removal of the old roofing materials and repair of the roof deck. Sometimes there are rotten sections of decking to replace. Rolled tar paper or other base material should go down first and then the flashing should be applied and sealed well. Now the roof is ready for its’ shingles. The first row should be applied overlapping the edge of the roof just the right amount and then the next rows of shingles overlap each other as per instructions. A good roofer has the experience to do a great job quickly for you.
