Rose Colored Glasses

When my son was in his first year of college, I knew that he was going to be in for a rude awakening. For one thing, he never had to study for an exam his whole life and writing term papers had been so easy for him. I knew that college was going to be a whole other ball game and I was hoping he knew that as well.

Halfway through his first semester he was exhausted and defeated. I think in some ways, college is harder for those who found high school easy, because at least the other kids already knew how to study. My son was frustrated with the vast number of research papers that he had to write. He was not used to working on more than one of these at a time.

He even offered to pay me and his younger sister to write a termpaper for him. He told me that all the work was ruining his college experience. I just laughed and told him that these assignments were the reason he was going to college. I do feel bad that he was wearing rose colored glasses going in, but I think he is growing in the experience.
