Simplify Mobility at Home

Posted By Admin on November 18, 2007 @ 11:09 pm

Most of us take our mobility for granted.  We run up stairs with ease.  But for some people, stairs can pose a serious challenge.  Lucky for them, there are affordable solutions.

Instead of moving or changing homes, mobility can be restored by installing a home stair lift.  These residential stair lifts install over existing stairs allowing easy access to upper floors of a home.  Even though they do take up a portion of the existing chairs, the stairs can still be used by those who do not have mobility problems.

Consideration must be taken in choosing the right handicap stair lift for the situation.  Certain conditions will affect the choice of the proper lift such as upper body strength, coordination and comprehension.

If you are unsure of your choices regarding which residential stair lift is right for you, you can arrange a free in-home consultation with a sales representative in your area.  These experts can examine you needs and recommend the product that is right for you.

Dental Insurance Tips

Posted By Admin on @ 10:47 pm

Just like many other types of insurance, not all policies are created equal.  Dental insurance companies have different packages tailored to your needs and budget.  If you have a trouble free dental history you may not need the same dental insurance that someone with bad teeth may need.

Don’t be as concerned with the price as you are with the specific services offered.  It makes no sense to purchase dental insurance that doesn’t cover braces if you happen to have some.  On the same token, if you have an expensive policy and you are not using all the benefits, don’t be afraid to downgrade – why pay for something you are not using.

If you are looking for affordable dental insurance, you will have the most success online.  You can compare your options side by side and make your selection from there.  This way, you can make an educated choice, instead of buying the first thing in front of you.

Betting Against Your Health

Posted By Admin on November 17, 2007 @ 9:57 pm

When you are young, unless you have bad genetics or bad habits, chances are that you are healthy.  At this point in your life, you take your health for granted, and don’t really consider that your good health may change some day.

The reality of it all is as we age, our health can deteriorate.  For some of us, it may be simple things, for others, they might need some form of long term care.  In fact, on a blog about long term care they state that the statistics show that after you reach the age of 65, you have a 70% chance of needing some form of long term care in your life.

Now, I have to ask: do you know how much long term care costs?

I really had no idea – until I looked.  From what I have read, you can expect to pay between thirty and eighty thousand dollars a year – and that is in today’s dollars.  The price is only going to go up.  For most people, long term care devastates the nest egg they saved up for retirement, and many pass this financial burden onto their children.

Just like you have an insurance policy on you life (you do have one, right?), you should have one betting against your health.  A long term care insurance policy is just that – in the even you need some long term care, your insurance policy would pay for it, leaving your savings and your family free from the bill.  Catch is you need to buy the policy before you need to use it – so be sure to look into this right away.

Travel To Disney World

Posted By Admin on @ 7:42 am

Our family has made plans to go to Disney World.  We have never gone on a trip like this before, so I wanted to do some research before we committed to the trip.

I went online and looked for one of my favorite sources of information: forums.  I was lucky enough to find the Disney World forum – and it had all the information I needed.

I found out that the Disney World Resort Hotels were rated in the top ten hotels in the country.  They cater to families – and the prices really were not too high.  Most people that commented about the hotels had positive things to say.

I also found out that Universal Studios was really close to where we would be staying.  Ever since it opened, I have dreamed of going there, and now is my chance.

All we have to do now is book our trip through our travel agent.  Then we can count down the days till we can go – I just can’t wait!

Picking the Best Mobile Phone

Posted By Mitefind on November 16, 2007 @ 4:24 pm

It has been a couple years since I bought my mobile phone and things have changed.  My old phone couldn’t play music, take pictures or hook up to my computer.  Don’t laugh – my phone was made in the stone age.

Now, looking at the phones that are available, I am a little overwhelmed.  With all the options on the market, I am finding it very hard to compare phones – I don’t know which one is better than the other.

So, I have decided to go to talk to a dealer about what I should get.  Now, I wouldn’t mind a phone that can take pictures, play music and hook up to my laptop while I am at school.  After I told the dealer my needs you could see his head wrinkle a bit in thought.

When he opened his mouth, he had two options for me in his hands.  In his left hand, he had the Nokia 6500 Classic – compact, sleek and only a 2 MP camera.  In his right hand he had the Nokia 6500 Slide – the first word that came to mind was smoking hot.  It had everything I was looking for and more – you could hook it up to a television to watch the content on there – I was sold on it instantly.

Just a few minutes later I was walking home with my new phone – and calling all my friends.  After all, I need to show off my new toy – I love it already.

Saved From Foreclosure

Posted By Admin on @ 12:26 am

I was talking to my cousin today on the phone.  She has been a successful executive at a local insurance company for the last few years and just recently married (in the last two years).  Right after their marriage, they purchased a large house for themselves and their new puppy.  Last time we talked, her husband had been laid off from work and they were struggling to keep up with all their payments.  I called to see how they were doing.

According to her, things were okay now, but they were pretty gloomy just a couple of months ago.  They were unable to keep up on their bills and even missed some mortgage payments.  It was to the point where if they missed one more mortgage payment, the bank would add their home to the repossessed properties they owned.  It ended up that these financial problems had put a huge strain on their marriage – they were at the point of considering divorce.

But a solution came from the least likely source – a coffee shop paper.  Erin had gone out for coffee one day and was reading a coffee shop paper, and saw an ad from a company that helped people avoid foreclosure.  She called and learned that they offered a sell and rent back program – they would solve her money problem by buying the house from them, and they would not have to move out of their home.

She shared this information with her husband and they quickly applied for their program.  Thankfully they were able to avoid having their home repossessed, they fixed their mortgage, and her husband has a new job.

I was so happy to hear that they made it through their financial crisis okay – it is hard to see others struggle.  For those of you in their situation, don’t worry, there are solutions – they just might turn up in the most unlikely of places.

Seminar on Parenting

Posted By Admin on November 15, 2007 @ 7:15 pm

Today I had the opportunity of attending a seminar on parenting.  It was not very long, but it focused on some key things that parents can do to ensure that their children have success in their lives.  According to them the key to success was parent involvement at all stages of their kids’ lives.

The first step to follow is parent involvement in education.  Now, this does not just mean scholastic education – it can include all facets of learning: from teaching your child their first words to showing them how to drive.  They continuously emphasized that parents needed to be committed to helping their child learn: whether it be reading them a book, letting them help you cook, or helping them with their homework.  By taking the time to let you child know that education is important, parents help instill a love of learning in their child.

Another key area that we covered is the lack of parent involvement in schools.  Part of the problem is the busy nature of most of our lives – which reduces the amount of time we have.  But, even something simple as volunteering for a field trip helps not only your child, but the other children in their class.  This can increase the one-on-one time between the students and adults, helping the kids get the answers they need.

Helping out in schools does not end after elementary school as many parents believe.  Instead it can continue into high school (think band trip chaperone) and even into college.  Think of it this way: if there is an activity going on, chances are they need someone to help out.

The presenters closed the seminar with a simple challenge to parents – get involved in your children’s lives.  With all the above compelling evidence, I do not see how you cannot.

Tweaking a MySpace Layout

Posted By Mitefind on November 12, 2007 @ 9:26 pm

I wanted to tweak my Myspace layout a little.  Specifically, I wanted my page to look a little different than everyone else – which is important because I am one of those free Myspace layouts that your can find on many sites.

Now, I wasn’t thinking of anything too radical, rather just something simple.    I thought that sprucing up the comment graphics would make a difference -  I get a lot of people commenting on my profile each day.  Also, I think it would be most noticeable to visitors.

So, I hunted online for tweaks for Myspace layouts.  After wading trough site after site, I found what I was looking for.  Just a simple change in the code of my layout and I was done.  I have already had some comments about my little change – and the response has been positive.  I am surprised how easy it was.

New to Web Hosting

Posted By Admin on @ 6:36 am

I don’t envy those of you out there that are new to web hosting.  Unfortunately, for those of you that are, there are a bunch of web hosting companies out there just to take your money – and offer poor uptime.  Check out the tips below for suggestions on how to avoid problems like these.

My first advice to you would be to check web host review websites.  They can provide a valuable resource as to what companies to avoid, as well as highlight any problems (or successes) other people have had along the way.  I would suggest comparing notes between different comparison sites to ensure that you are getting accurate information.

Another way to avoid some of the common problems with web hosting would be to find business web hosting.  The reason that I suggest this is that most businesses will not put up with bad quality – if it is poor, they move elsewhere.  So, usually business caliber hosting should be better – again check the reviews on your potential web hosts.

The last thing I would suggest is don’t be afraid to move your site.  If the web hosting experience is not quite what you thought it would be, don’t be afraid to move.  Hosting is really not different than any other service based company – if you don’t like the service, take your business elsewhere.  Sure, it is a pain to move hosts, on the other hand if the hosting doesn’t make you happy, why are you there?

Working on a Website Layout

Posted By Admin on November 11, 2007 @ 7:39 pm

It has taken me about a week, but I have come up with a mock-up of a website template I would like to create.  I know some of you are going to give me the gears about taking so long, but I wanted to get it right the first time.

So now that I have the template on a piece of paper, I needed to figure out how to do it.  I searched within a strong directory for the solution, and I ended up at a designer’s forum.

Looking at the posts on the forum, I found out that pretty much 99% of the developers use Adobe Photoshop to design a thing called a "PSD" that makes it easier to setup your template and change options before you code.

Seeing that I knew nothing about Photoshop (even though I did have it on my computer), I decided to find some Photoshop tutorials online that would help me figure out what I needed to do.

Fast forward ten minutes…

I found some tutorials that will step me through what I need to do.  Alright, I am going to get at it… I hope it turns out okay :)
